What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

People often ask me what it feels like to be hypnotized. The answer really is that it feels differently for different people, at different times. One of the things I might say to someone sometimes is, 'Close your eyes. Now open them. That's what hypnosis feels like. You with your eyes closed, me talking.' But truly that is only one of the experiences. Everyone is different and will have different experiences. In the video Dawn explains what it was like for her to be hypnotized at my Comedy Hypnosis Show in Kelso, WA.

I've had subjects at a comedy hypnosis show say that they remember everything about the experience and I've had subjects that don't remember anything about it. A subject once told me that she knew what she was doing but she couldn't stop herself. If I remember right she did an excellent version of Madonna's 'Like a Virgin' LOL. Many subjects say it felt like they were in a dream.
With those that can't seem to remember anything about being hypnotized they will sometimes begin recalling parts of the comedy show (and their participation) later. Especially if they are being ribbed by their family and friends about what they were doing on stage. Of course no one is ever humiliated or mistreated - all I really do with the hypnosis is lower their inhibitions and help to liberate their natural creativity. I'm still surprised sometimes at what's possible with hypnosis and how well it can work.
It's the same too for hypnotherapy clients. Sometimes they report that they remember everything, sometimes they don't consciously remember anything. Which sometimes causes them to wonder if the hypnosis will work if they don't remember what I said.

The thing is though that most of my clients know exactly what they need to do to be successful in whatever they are wanting to achieve whether it's to eat less ice cream (for weight loss), not smoking, or stop biting their fingernails. What they can recall consciously doesn't really matter in hypnotherapy because where I really want to plant the positive suggestions is in the other-than-conscious mind. That's the part of the mind that controls your habits. Th
e part of you that is right now running your heart, lungs, and the rest of the systems of the body.
When a person learns to drive they are using their conscious mind. They have to think about every action. Once they been doing it for awhile it just becomes second nature. That's because it's now stored in the other-than-conscious mind. You know longer have to think about the actions you just sort of go on autopilot.
For some people eating healthy food and exercising is for them, being on autopilot. With hypnotherapy my goal is to get a weight loss client to have that same kind of autopilot behavior towards healthy food and exercise. When a smoker feels stressed their autopilot often is to reach for a cigarette. A non smoker doesn't reach for a cigarette when they're stressed because their autopilot has a different 'program'.
